Communication: Heart to heart

Talk is not created by printing technique, it is a figure painting derived from photograph. Although it is one¡¡ of the important elements of my work, doesn¡¯t mean that has to be used for technical essentials. I always use it for material which is helping me to refresh memories as its original role and sketch like more traditional approach. As if photograph affects the audiences and their ability for visual conception with its technique or the way to manipulate image, Talk shows image manipulation though overlapping of photos and changing the mechanical view of camera.

Basically, artist wants to demonstrate the characteristics of work with the realistically describing the face illustrated expression and emotion, and then audience can recognize it through the work, this might be from painting as well as photograph. Figurative painting has that connotation of character, profession of subject who is main features and describes what artist desires to. In case of these paintings, we can figure out the subjective interpretation of artist from this textured face. However, Talk denies showing common fixed figurative expression, it is found from every character who poses toward wall and floor and tries to focus out of audience, we onl¡¡y catch their back images. In 1 dimensional space such as wall, they seem to be in misrepresented world or hyperspace like movie screen, it indicates their solitude or pervasive contemporary alienation. It doesn¡¯t represent exactly someone who is special this is typical character who we meet in our daily life, whenever and wherever.

talk, 2009, oil on canvas, 130.3¡¿193.9cm

These images are hard to say that is based on the real existence, they represents the time as named ¡®memory-image¡¯. Main motif is epitomizing alienation and anonymity caused from popularization and individualism in which find out easily in anywhere. I try to figure out their life hidden in the civilized reality and make audiences retrace their existence. The face of contemporary who is individual and lives in enclosed world appears in the back image. This closed-up-pose looks like photographic expression, and it makes them to simulate in the movie theater.

For presenting this image, I focus on the background, decide wide vacant empty space, wall and floor to its basic resources, and bring into it to match the meaning of emptiness. This is a kind of formative way to blow the visual mood in the painting. Strong blush stroke and its marks make audience feel the energy of painting and atmosphere of visualized image, I think this the privilege onl¡¡y given to this kind of painting. However, this is not the simulacratic aura which Walter Benjamin mentioned.

Photograph is the decisive media to make images in 21st Century, eventually contributes to collapse the modern paradigm. It inspired the artists of 1970s in the range of unique technique and affect to them in the meaning of image, too. They emphasized that photograph was the challenging against the work of art as it had aura, it conflicted with its authority, subjectivity, uniqueness, and originality of its own existence and hypothesis that reflects the humanities. We can find clue from the The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, it mentioned aura as an unique phenomenon of a distance, however close it may be, that is the definition of the work of art what he thought.

talk, 2009, oil on canvas, 120¡¿300cm

Contemporaries¡¯ life is familiar with mass reproduction and clearly visible in flood images and information. Contemporary figurative Painting in the age of mechanical reproduction has to interpret in totally different point of view. Even though, Talk is inspired by ¡®memory-image, not use images created before. In the aspect of demonstrating the dailiness, it is related with commercial iconography of popular experience of Pop Art. However, it is created for trying to look into the mind and inner figure of them who suffer from the anxiety of existence.

Corresponding with the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, the painting which is based on the enlarged reproductive image reflected real into the canvas designates the reality and behind the scene of it.

Here is the thing, the contemporaries are anonymous existence, on the other way, and they are others. The former, it means they are the person who has identity but lose its real value or real name, the latter, indicates their emotion regarding the forfeit of subjectivity. Therefore, figurative language that I want to demonstrate in Talk is the language in the age of looseness. But nobody can¡¯t understand communicate and we can¡¯t identify it.

Whether we recognize or not, we belong anonymous absolute space like black hole in otherness and its form. In this situation, the sign of reproductive image that I desire to represent is hard to find its existence, if it is, we can¡¯t indicate its meaning. Obviously the image without existence shows the expression of us who feels forfeit of existence, not real emtion of human. - Jong-Kie Jeong
